Activities

Reservoir Social
Sand Hollow
Grafton

Every month I planned one large activity for the people on my floor, centered around the theme of outdoor adventure. I will give a brief description of these activities. in addition to these, I also helped plan and attended other activities, listed on the calendar.

For the first big activity we had a social at the Lake on the Hill. All of the residents met in front of the building and then car pooled to the Cedar City reservoir where we had snacks and were able to kayak and paddle board. During this activity I was able to get to know the residents better and they were able to form friendships between themselves.

For September our large activity involved driving to Hurricane to go to Sand Hollow reservoir. This activity was with another floor in the building. Once there the residents were able to swim in the reservoir and explore the rocks formations that surround the reservoir. The other RA and myself also provided snacks for all of the residents that attended. Also, because we had the residents carpool down to the reservoir they had the chance to meet other people that are on their floor and the floor beneath them.

For our bug activity for October the Outdoor Adventure floor went to Grafton Ghost Town, located right outside of Zion National Park. We were able to look around the abandoned town, go into some of the buildings, watch the wildlife, and explore the area. While there we also had the chance to learn about the history of the town and visit the cemetery right outside the town. The cemetery had a plaque that detailed who was there and how they died. It gave the residents a good insight into what it was like living in that time. Learning about the town’s history helps residents to understand why we need to be respectful to places like that and help preserve them.

Walk in my Shoes

One of the largest activities that I was a part of planning and executing was called Walk in my Shoes. It was an activity to promote and inform students about diversity. We created several different rooms where students watched videos, were put in situations that helped them understand what other students go through, and talked to people who's lives were very different from theirs. At the end the students were also encouraged to post a secret

anonymously on a wall. The purpose of the wall was to help students express themselves healthily and to know that there are others out there who are going through similar things. We received excellent feedback from residents about their experiences during this event.
